Light Investigations

This week we have been enjoying learning about light and shadows. We carried out an investigation to find out which materials would allow the most light through them.

We started by making our classroom as dark as possible. Then we got into small groups and used torches to see how much light would pass through a range of different materials, such as glass, cardboard, cellophane, and greaseproof paper.

We had to sort the materials into different groups: transparent, translucent, and opaque. If you're not sure what those words mean you could come and ask us in school and we'll tell you all about what we found out!

Fire Sculpture

We have now finished working on our fire sculpture. We started by watching the bonfire in our school playground a few weeks ago. We then drew the fire using lots of different techniques - you can see our photos here on the blog - and in the last couple of weeks we have been making a 3-d version of the fire in our Creative Area. We practised mixing different shades of brown paint and used these to paint some cardboard boxes - these were our logs. We then used chicken wire and tissue paper to make the flames, which we bent and stood up in and around the fire. Here it is....

Shadow Theatre

The children had lots of fun with the shadow theatre. They made puppets and put on plays. The shadow theatre also helped them to gain further understanding of their science topic. They learnt that light travels, and that shadows are formed when light is blocked.

Football

This Afternoon Gareth from manchester city came in and did some football. First we warmed up by running around some cones. When he said a colour you had to run to it and pick it up. If you picked it up you got a point. Samuel won the game he got 5 cones. As well we did some exercises and then we did some throwing the ball to a partner. Then we threw a ball high and controlled it fast. Then we finished and we came back to the classroom. After that we did some blogging what I am doing now.

More bonfire artwork...

Here's some more of our bonfire artwork...

Bonfire Artwork

Our class topic this half term is Light and Dark. Last week we watched a bonfire in our school playground and talked about the colours and shapes that it made. Afterwards we looked at photos we had taken of the fire and used different techniques to create some bonfire artwork.

Some of the pictures were made using pastels. Others were done using card to create collages. We also used the laptops to create some fire artwork based on the work of Mondrian.

Next week we'll be creating more artwork based on our bonfire, this time in the form of a sculpture, which we're going to make alongside Class J. We all need to remember to bring a small cardboard box into school, which we're going to transform into a part of our group artwork. Thank you to all the people who have already brought their box into school. Could the people who haven't please bring one in on Monday.

You'll be able to come and see our bonfire sculpture in a couple of weeks time!

Have a fun weekend everyone

Bonfires

On Monday our caretaker, Mr Stocks, built a bonfire for our class. We watched it in the playground and looked carefully at all the different colours and shapes that the flames made. We also used our noses and ears to think about the smells and sounds. When we got back to class we used our ideas to write some descriptive bonfire poems.
Thank you, Mr Stocks for helping us with our project - we really enjoyed our bonfire!
